OXFORD
Oxford is an old student town, home of its world famous university
(the oldest English-speaking university around the world). The city
has a lot of activity, with many pubs, restaurants, parties, etc..
Oxford is known as the city of dreaming spires, and its main
attraction are the different historic buildings of the university.
The best way to discover them is wandering around the campus,
although it should be noted that access to many of them is restricted
to teachers and students. However, some of the schools and libraries
can be visited.
The Bodleian Library (which is actually a complex of buildings)
has a copy of every book published in England since 1610. There
also is the historic Duke Humfrey's Library (XV century) and the
Gothic Divinity School, with its magnificent vaulted ceiling open
to the public.
The Ashmolean Museum was founded in 1683 and is the oldest in
the United Kingdom. It covers 4000 years of history from the ancient
civilizations of Egypt, Greece and Rome to the XX century. It
has collections of art, archeology, sculpture, ceramics, musical
instruments and much more.
Another museum to visit in Oxford is the Natural History Museum.
The building is spectacular (inside and outside) and their collections,
with replicas of dinosaur, elephants, crocodiles and other large
animals skeletons, are impressive and allow visitors to touch
them. The cabinets, almost endless, show rich collections of all
aspects of natural history. Moreover, daily activities are specifically
designed for children, the real users of this museum.
