Amsterdam
Amsterdam is a seductive, provincial and cosmopolitan city that
extends in concentric circles of
canals
around the ancient city which gives it an own character. It is
a large city that welcomes the tourists and it is opened to new
tendencies. Nevertheless, for many people the only reason that
justifies the visit is the importance of its
museums
and, for others, the sale and consumption of soft drugs.
Amsterdam was constructed in XIIth century in a dock on the river
Amstel (it gives the name to the city). During the time of the
Reformation the city had a great commercial development and it
became safe place for people that fled from Antwerp by religious
reasons. Once released of Spanish dominion (XIIth century) the
city grew until becoming a great commercial centre.
At the beginning of 1700 the city underwent certain declivity,
but it returned to resurge in recent 1960 accepting all alternative
movements.
Nowadays the city still beings a very interesting site due to
their outdoor spectacles that are celebrated in summer, their
clubs and their bars, its attitude with soft drugs and its exceptional
red light district.
