Slovenia
The Republic of Slovenia is the most stable, prosperous and welcoming
country of communist Europe. It was always the richest republic
of Yugoslavia. Although it took part in the War of the Ten Days
when attained its independence in 1991, it has not been involved
in the conflicts that did so much harm in the former Yugoslavia.
For centuries Slovenia remained under the control of feudal lords
German-speaking and until 1918 was part of the Austro-Hungarian
Empire. Despite this Slovenes were able to maintain their cultural
identity through their language close to the Czech, Slovak.
Its landscape is varied and beautiful. To the north there are
the Julian Alps, whose more accessible area is around the lakes
Bled and Bohinj. To the south is the region of the Carso, with
spectacular caves as Postojna.
The capital, Ljubljana, is a beautiful city where it is comfortable
to live, full of life and with an abundance of Baroque architecture
in the age of the Habsburgs.
The very short coast has some interesting cities as Piran and
Portoroz and the port of Kopes, with its beautiful old town.
